The English Colonial Museum was scheduled to open next month, but thieves broke in recently and stole six exhibits on the 13 Colonies! The director of the museum has asked The Spence School for help with recreating the lost exhibits and we have chosen YOU to participate in this collaboration.
Working in research teams, you will learn about the history of a colony and develop an informative visual display. Upon completion of the display, you will act as docents (museum guides) for your exhibit, teaching visitors about what you have learned.
The research on your assigned colony must focus on the following:
- Indigenous Populations: What Native American tribes lived in this region and how did they live? How did the Native Americans interact with the English colonists?
- Industry and Economy: What were the major industries in your colony? What was the economy of the region? How did people make money in the colony?
- Reasons for Settlement: Who were important founders or leaders of the colony? Why did colonists settle there?
- Religion: What religion did people in the colony practice? What were the beliefs? How did it affect other aspects of life in the colony?
- Education: What were schools or education like in your colony?
As part of this project, you will also have the opportunity to examine artifacts and a topic of interest connected to your colony or colonial region.
- Artifact: Find an artifact that was used during the 1600s/1700s. Include the name of the artifact, who used it, what it was used for, and how it was used.
- Topic of Interest/Fun Fact/Student Choice: Select a topic of interest that you want to learn more about (e.g., fashion, music, art, literature, colonial medicines, architecture, festivals and holidays, etc.
